Description (from People of Medieval Scotland)
Alan son of Roland, constable of the Scots, has given, granted, and established by his charter, to Melrose Abbey his whole waste of Lammermuir (BWK) in exchange for the land of ‘Keresban’ (in Dalmellington parish, AYR), which the said monks have given to him by their charter, saving common pasture in the said waste. Their draught animals shall not spend the night in the said pasture, but shall remain at their own houses every day [?]. Having and holding free and quit from all earthly service , custom and secular exaction with all immunities and liberties. If they farm the waste, they may build ditches, hedges or dykes to enclose their fields of grain and meadows.
