Patrick of Ryedale has given, granted and made firm by this his charter to Melrose Abbey, by the agreement of Walter, his son and heir, for the souls of his lords, David, Malcolm and William, kings of Scotland, and Earl Henry and for the souls of his father and mother and all his ancestors and for the salvation of his lord, Alexander, king of Scots, and for the salvation of himself and W, his son, and all his successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms, that part of the land in the territory of Lilliesleaf (ROX) by stated bounds including the land of Patrick of Ryedale, the land of the bishop of Glasgow, and the land of the abbot of Kelso, except that part of the land which William son of Alexander held from him and his heirs. Additionally, he gave and granted to the monks pasture for 12 bulls, 10 cows, five horses and 100 sheep wherever his beasts and the beasts of his men of the same villa graze with all the other common easements of the same villa. He and his heirs will support and warrant all the aforesaid of the monks and will acquit them from all terrestrial service, custom and secular exaction [owed] to the lord king and any others in perpetuity.
