John son of Michael has given, granted and made firm by his present charter to Melrose Abbey the whole land which Aldred the artisan and Oliver, his son, held in his land of Pensheil (ELO), by stated bounds, in pure and perpetual alms, free and quit from all terrestrial service, custom and secular exaction. John and his heir will acquit them from all terrestrial service.
