Prior Bertram (I) and the convent of Durham have given, granted, and made firm by the present charter to their esteemed clerk William, nepos of Prior Arnold of Coldingham, as a vicarage, the altarage of the church of Earlston with the whole land pertaining to the church, and with all other things that pertain to the said altarage, freely, quietly, and honourably; with 10 silver marks to be rendered thereupon yearly, 5 marks at Pentecost and 5 marks at the feast of St Martin; [interlinear addition: saving to themselves the garbal teind of the said church, except for the garbal teind of the aforenamed church itself, which William claims for that reason] [ruled out: and from episcopal revenues the said William shall support both the households (hospicia) of the archdeacons and of the officials. William has sworn to obey the prior and convent of Durham.
