John son of Orm has given, by the consent and good will of his lord, King William, and granted and by this his charter established to Melrose Abbey, for the souls of David and Malcolm, his lords, and for the soul of Earl Henry and for the salvation of his lord, King William, and David, his brother, and for the salvation of himself and his wife and for the redemption of their souls and for the souls of his father and mother and all their ancestors and successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms, the land of Hownam (ROX) by its correct bounds which he perambulated between his land and the land of the Whitton and between his land and the land of Grubbit and between his land and the land of Clifton and between his land and the land of Mow, by further stated bounds, free and quit from all aids, pleas, gelds, assizes, and from all service, custom and secular exaction. The monks are to return to him and his heirs 20s. annually.
