Description (from People of Medieval Scotland)

Affrica daughter of Edgar, for the soul of Sir William, king of Scotland, and others, and for the welfare of her lord, Alexander, king of Scotland, and the Queen, and others, has given, granted, and established by her charter, to Melrose Abbey, in free, pure and perpetual alms, one quarter part of a full villa in the territory of Dunscore (DMF), lying between Dercungal (Holywood, DMF) and the burn of ‘Pollogan’ (Birkshaw Burn?), by its right bounds, from ‘Pollogan’ by the burn which descends from the moss (Dalgoner Moss?) to the west and then descends into the ford of ‘Carñ’ towards ‘Glenesclan’ (Glenesslin), and from there by the ‘Carñ’ (Cairn Water) towards the east until the burn called ‘Pollocostertan’ and from there upwards until ‘Crosgarriauch’, which is the boundary between the land of the canons of Dercongal and ‘Derrengorran’, ascending by the road until ‘Durreswen’, and descending by the pile of stones until a certain syke descending until the burn called ‘Pollogan’. All of this land she has given and granted to the monks of Melrose in pereptuity, to employ as they see fit. She has also granted to the said monks free entrance and exit through all her lands and her men’s lands with their draught animals and other necessities.
