Papal Letter: DCA DCD Misc. Ch. 871

Description (from People of Medieval Scotland)

Pope Gregory IX writes to the abbot of Kelso, H[ugh], archdeacon of Glasgow and L[aurence], archdeacon of St Andrews, stating that Th[omas], knight, and J[uliana], his wife, stated in their complain that the priors of Durham and Coldingham and their convents, and certain other clerks of the dioceses of St Andrews and Durham, are injuring them concerning lands, possessions and other things, whereby he commands them to summon the parties, hear the case and determine it with a fit end, without appeal, causing what they decree to be observed firmly by ecclesiastical censure. If the witnesses named have withdrawn out of favour, hatred or fear, they shall compel them by a similar stricture, without appeal, to provide testimony of the truth. If all of [the judges] cannot carry this out, let two of them do it.
