John de Normanville has given, granted and made firm by his charter to Melrose Abbey, for the soul of his father and mother and all his ancestors and for the salvation of his lord, Alexander, king of Scots, and for the salvation of himself and all his successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms, a certain part of his land of Maxton (ROX) towards the west, opposite the houses of Morehouse which are in the land of monks of Melrose, just as he along with the prior and cellarer of Melrose perambulated the said land to them. John and his heirs will acquit them from all service, custom and secular exaction or demand. (damaged)
