Nicholas the weaver, burgess of Berwick states that while he had conveyed to the abbot and convent of Melrose half his land of Briggate (in Berwick, BWK), in pure and perpetual alms, and he had sold another half to them for 100 marks of legal sterling, as the seal which they have concerning the same land testifies, the abbot and convent, for the increase of the money, gave and granted to him, Hilda, his wife or their ‘others’ 10 bolls of wheat and one chalder of barley and ½ mark of silver annually at the feast of Saint Michael at Berwick. Thenceforth, Nicholas, by this his charter, binds himself and all his goods, moveable and immovable, to the abbot and convent, if by chance there is a defect of warranty relating to the land.
