Settlement: DCA DCD Misc. Ch. 955

Description (from People of Medieval Scotland)

Hugh, abbot of Dryburgh, John, prior of Dryburgh, and Master Laurence, archdeacon of St Andrews, recite letters of Pope Gregory [IX], stating that the prior and convent of Durham have complained that the abbot and convent of Kelso, the nuns of Berwick, and certain other clergy and laymen of the diocese of St Andrews, injure them concerning teinds and other matters. Abbot Hugh, Prior John and Master Laurence, by the authority of this letter, when there was a dispute before them between the prior and convent of Durham and Roger Duze concerning lands in the territory of Coldingham (BWK) pertaining by right to the said prior and convent, a composition was made between them, whereby the said Roger restored to Durham all the land which he had both in the villa of Coldingham and outside it, without retaining any, and quitclaimed it. The priory of Durham charitably granted to Roger food and clothing for his whole life in the house of Coldingham so that he shall be instituted into the office of the Word and shall faithfully minister there. Should one party wish to contravene this agreement, the parties have subjected themselves to the jurisdiction of the abbot, prior and archdeacon, whoever shall be at the time, so that they may compel them to observe it by ecclesiastical censure.
