Patrick of Whitton has granted, given and by this his charter established to Melrose Abbey, for the soul of his father, his mother and all his ancestors and for the salvation of Sir Patrick the earl and his heirs and for the salvation of his soul, his wife and all his successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms, a certain part of his land in the territory of Spott (ELO), namely ‘Lochaneshalech’, by stated bounds, which include the fosse of the monks, from all alien and terrestrial service and from all exaction and secular custom in perpetuity.
