John son of Michael of Methil has given, granted and made firm by this his charter to Melrose Abbey all his land of Penshiel (ELO), in pure and perpetual alms. John is to annually render to the prior of Melrose, whomever he may be at the time, three marks of silver at Pentecost which, for the salvation of his soul and his children, he affirmed for his pitance to the convent of Melrose. He and his heirs will support and defend the whole land of the monks with all its liberties and just pertinents against all men, except the land which he gave to the monks of May and except the land which the granted to Henry Little and his heirs by their correct bounds in the territory of [Pen]shiel, quit from all service, custom, exaction and demand.
