Alexander of Seton the knight, son of Sir Saer of Seton, has [given], granted and made firm by this is present charter to Melrose Abbey [for the souls of] all his ancestors and successors and for the salvation of himself, his wife and his heirs, all the land which he had in the territory of Ruchlaw (ELO), by stated bounds, in free, pure and perpetual alms. And for the good of peace to be had between the monks, lay brothers, and servants of the grange of ‘Eddemunistun’ (in Stenton, ELO) and him, his heirs and his men of Ruchlaw, he establishes restrictions relating to their animals.
